一次，安徒生想起自己过去一段失败的爱情经历，想起《亚格涅格》这部小说的女主人公的遭遇，她在龙宫里度过了多年，后来扔下丈夫龙王和6个幼女，回到了人间。她的几个女儿怎样呢？

安徒生的脑海里又浮现出一个个画面。6个小人鱼由祖母教养，正在成长中，6个小人鱼都那么美丽，而那个最小的是最美丽的。她的皮肤又光又嫩，像玫瑰的花瓣，她的眼睛是蔚蓝色的，像晶莹的湖水。

到15岁时，祖母给她戴上一个百合花编的花环，每一个花瓣都有一颗珍珠，让她把头伸出海面去玩。她看见了好多好多的东西，而最使她高兴的是，海面上的一条船上有一个王子，他长着一对大大的黑眼珠，真是漂亮极了。
